Opal Types and Care: Appreciating Play-of-Color
Understand white, black, boulder, crystal and fire opal, along with the careful wear each deserves.
Opal can appear to hold light within itself. Its shifting play-of-color gives it a special relationship with movement and makes each cabochon, boulder seam or transparent fire opal feel individual.

Body color changes the drama
White opal has a light body tone and soft flashes. Black opal has a darker background that can make color appear more intense. Boulder opal preserves natural host rock, while crystal opal lets color seem to float within a translucent body.

A cabochon honors the material
Many opals are cut as smooth domes rather than faceted stones. This shape protects the surface and lets the play-of-color travel across the gem as the wearer moves. It also gives a ring or pendant a softer, more tactile profile.

Wear opal with awareness
Opal benefits from protection from sharp impact, abrupt heat and strong chemicals. It can be wonderful for regular wear when the setting is supportive and the wearer understands that this is a stone to enjoy with a little more care.
