Emerald has a distinct visual language: green color, velvet-like depth and a network of natural internal features often called jardin. These characteristics can make each stone feel individual, and they also call for informed care.

The jardin is part of emerald’s identity
Many natural emeralds contain visible internal features. They are not automatically a flaw. In a well-chosen stone, the eye reads them as texture and life within a saturated green field, much like brushwork inside a painting.

Choose thoughtful cleaning
Warm water, a small amount of mild soap and a soft brush are usually the most conservative choice. Avoid steam, ultrasonic cleaning and sudden temperature shifts unless a qualified jeweler has reviewed the individual stone and any treatments it may have received.

Settings can support long-term wear
Emerald-cut stones have elegant corners that deserve protection. Bezel details, corner prongs and well-considered gallery architecture can guard vulnerable edges while keeping the stone’s green color visible from above.
Emerald is not a stone to treat as anonymous. When you embrace its natural character and care for it gently, it can become one of the most emotionally resonant gems in a collection.
