Jewelry Care by Gemstone: A Practical Starting Point
Match your jewelry care routine to the hardness, treatments and character of the gemstone you wear.

No single cleaning routine fits every gemstone. A diamond, sapphire and ruby are often more resilient in daily wear than an opal, pearl or emerald. Care begins with knowing which materials are in your piece and respecting their particular needs.
01
Hardness is only one part of the story
Mohs hardness describes scratch resistance, but it does not explain every vulnerability. Some stones can be chipped by impact, affected by heat or altered by chemicals even when they resist scratching well.
02
Treatments deserve clear records
Certain gems may be treated to improve color or clarity. A treatment is material information, not automatically a negative. It simply affects the cleaning method, repair strategy and information you should keep with the piece.
03
Create a small care habit
Remove fine jewelry before heavy exercise, swimming, cleaning and high-impact tasks. Store pieces individually, inspect them periodically and keep a record of the stone, setting and any care instructions supplied when it was made.
The safest jewelry routine is specific. Learn what is in your piece, then use a gentle method that respects the stone rather than applying a universal shortcut.
